Starting Ekwa

In this video, Chris Irwin realizes a horse-owner’s dream come true – the breeding, raising and starting of a young horse. Ekwa – Cree for “seize the moment” – is a 3 year-old Friesian-Hanoverian and daughter of Tsunami, Chris’ long-time equine companion.  Over a 6-day period, Chris demonstrates the crucial steps in starting a young horse, earning respect and instilling trust while introducing bridle, surcingle, long lines, and saddle.  He then demonstrates the precious and delicate first few rides – both in his indoor arena, and outside in Riversong’s beautiful meadow – which can be the making or breaking of a horse’s future.
